Lendoria Sowell Johnson was born on January 1, 1951 to the late Lloyd Sowell, Sr. and Thelma Scarborough Sowell. She died on Saturday, February 17, 2018. Lendoria was the eighth of ten children. She arrived early and was so small that her mother affectionately nicknamed her “Bird”. She received her education in the Chesterfield County school system. She took her education seriously and excelled in many subjects that served her well in her adult life.
Lendoria met and fell in love with Wilbert Johnson. They were married on March 5, 1972. In due course, they started their family. After losing their first son, they were joyful when their son, Jeremie arrived. They were later blessed with another son, Jonathan, who sadly passed away as an infant. Lendoria doted on Jeremie and he was truly her “Pride & Joy”.
Lendoria’s quest for knowledge included the search to understand the Bible. She began to study the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses and decided she had found the Truth. So, she dedicated her life to Jehovah and symbolized that dedication on June 18, 1976 by being baptized as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses at the Sacred Secret District Convention, held in Charlotte, NC. Since Lendoria was a people person already, with a “Gift for Gab”, she used those traits in sharing her faith and the promises found in the Bible with everyone she met.
She loved her family and looked forward to spending as much time with them as possible. She especially loved the Sisters’ Day she would regularly share with her sisters throughout the years. Love for her family and roots were shown in the cookbook she authored, which she dedicated to her beloved mother.
Lendoria possessed a warm and generous spirit. She attempted to imitate the loving generosity of Dorcas, from the Bible. One way Lendoria loved to demonstrate such generosity was by purchasing school supplies for students at the beginning of each school year. This was an event she always looked forward to.
Besides teaching others about the Bible, Lendoria used her sharp mind to do taxes, accounting, and help her husband run their Vitality Health Food store, in Cheraw, SC. She loved to entertain, travel, and sing. She loved to go on cruises and sing Karaoke, sing at weddings and gatherings. But, she could always be heard singing the clearest at the meetings at the Kingdom Hall. Something we all will surely miss.
In addition to her parents, Lendoria was preceded in death by her two sons, Nathan Titus Johnson and Jonathan Johnson; her sister, Ella ReeMcFarland, and her brothers Alfred Sowell and Lloyd Sowell, Jr. She leaves behind her loving husband of over 45 years, Wilbert Johnson; her son, Jeremie Johnson (Camille); six sisters: Bessie Donald, Cecilia Blackwell, Bertha Bowman (Lemuel), Dorothy Wright (Bobby), Yolanda Wright (Roger) and Arnetta Funderburk (Ervin); an aunt, Mary Martin); and uncle, William Scarborough; a sister-in-law, Drucilla Sowell and a brother-in-law, Joseph McFarland; several nieces and nephews; and many, many friends who will miss her very much.
