Obituary
Carolyn R. Reed, affectionately known as “Cookie” to family and friends, was born on April 20th, 1955, in Brooklyn, New York, to Lutia and Willie Reed. A proud Coney Island native, she received her education at Abraham Lincoln High School and Kingsborough Community College.
From the very beginning, Cookie answered her true calling as an educator in the New York City Public School System. She spent many years teaching, guiding, and inspiring young minds at P.S. 190. There, she was more than a teacher; she was a mentor and a steady source of encouragement. Although she did not have children of her own, she poured as much love, wisdom, and care into generations of students, shaping lives and leaving a legacy of guidance and support until she retired.
Twenty-five years ago, while standing at a bus stop in Coney Island, fate brought Cookie and Willie Suber together. What began as a chance encounter turned into a long-lasting relationship. She loved listening to music and singing. She sang in various church choirs and lent her voice to many community events. Cookie also enjoyed being outside, especially when she had her beloved dog with her. One of her favorite restaurants was Carolina’s, where she enjoyed getting her grits with Willie.
Cookie had a very close relationship with her mother, “Lue” who relocated to South Carolina after retiring. When her mother got sick, Cookie didn’t hesitate to move her back to Coney Island to care for her. The dedication and devotion she had as her caregiver was inspiring and spoke volumes of her character.
She was preceded in death by her sister Debbie, her mother, Lue, and her father, Willie Reed. Cherishing the memory of Cookie are Willie, her nephew, Desmond, her godsons, Justin and Mitchell, her cousin, Tonya, her aunts and uncles, a host of cousins, other relatives, and dedicated friends.
Cookie’s spirit, her laughter, love, and dedication will continue to live in the hearts of those she touched.
